MARCH 8 – WOMEN AND THE SEA. WOMEN THAT MADE HISTORY.
Today, we celebrate the women who changed the way we look at the sea…
1530 Grace O’Malley, the first female sailor, known as “the Queen of the sea”. A bold girl that loved dressing up like a man, and that steered her dad’s ships.
1765 Jean Baret, the first woman to circumnavigate the globe.
1978 Krystyna Chojnowska – Liskiewicz, the first woman to circumnavigate in solitary. It took her 401 days non-stop.
2009 Laura Dekke, the youngest of the solo sailors, who ventured out on a 48 foot yacht when she was only 16 years old.
2004 Elle McArthur, the woman who won the title of “Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire” beating the record historically held by a man.
Congratulations to all those women that have made, and will keep making the water their genuine passion.
