Ventotene is on the border between Lazio and Campania. It is a very small island. It is 3 kilometer long and 800 metre wide. It is inhabited by around 700 people, includes the small island of Santo Stefano located 1 mile to the east . Ventotene, formerly called Greek Pandaria, It is well known as the island where the daughter of emperor Augustus, Julia the Elder , in the II° century BC was exiled for 5 years for adultery and where the same penalty had Agrippina ,Tiberius grandniece in 29th AC. The Roman built a very safe harbor to moor their fleets as well later the Bourbons . The roman harbor is still used for boats up to 13 mt.
Ventotene is known for peaceful atmosphere and wild nature. Very interesting the Antiquarium which hosts roman remains found on the land and in the sea. Ventotene is well known in Europe for the Manifesto di Ventotene written by Altiero Spinelli who was the “Founding Fathers of the European Union” .
